One of the most bracing and critically acclaimed plays in recent Broadway history, August: Osage County is a portrait of the dysfunctional American family at its finest—and absolute worst. When the patriarch disappears one night, the family reunites and long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed. August: Osage County originally premiered at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre.

The New York Times calls it “flat-out, no asterisks and without qualifications, the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years.”

A 2010 Tony Award nominee for Best Play and Pulitzer Prize finalist, this playful and entertaining story set at the dawn of the age of electricity examines the medical treatment of hysteria of Victorian-era women. In the Next Room or the vibrator play is a groundbreaking examination of marriage and love.

Ruhl’s play premiered at Berkeley Repertory Company and went on to be presented at Broadway’s Lincoln Center Theatre. “In the Next Room brings scintillating news of the politics of desire, scientific history, and sexual behavior. Part of the comedy of Ruhl’s play—her most commercial and best to date—is her nonjudgmental attack on a sensational subject…Ruhl has extended the geography of the comedy of manners.”—The New Yorker
